I was a marketing consultant for Dr Atkins for several years before his death. In fact, I published his newsletter. Dr. Atkins was pilloried by the press because he claimed that carbohydrates and not fats were making Americans fat. The American food industry didn’t like that and they were supported in their orchestrated attacks on him by the AMA. Even Oprah Whitney got on his case.
Today we know he was right. Not 100% right on every count, but essentially correct in identifying the danger with a diet that is heavy in carbohydrates.
Sugar is a carbohydrate. In his podcast, “Here’s the Thing”, Alec Baldwin interviews Dr. Robert Lustig, who talks about the very serious danger that sugar poses to children and adults.
In his words, “There is not one biochemical reaction in your body, not one, that requires dietary fructose, not one that requires sugar. Dietary sugar is completely irrelevant to life. People say oh, you need sugar to live. Garbage.”
